Is it really Optimum — or is it your gateway? (4-step troubleshoot)

  1. Reboot your gateway/modem. Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in, wait 3 minutes. This resolves ~40% of "outages" people report. After 28 years of installs, Rick's seen this many times.
  2. Check the lights on the modem/ONT. If the "internet" or "online" light is off or red, the carrier signal isn't reaching you — that's a carrier-side problem. If all lights are green, the carrier signal is fine and the problem is your router or Wi-Fi.
  3. Try Ethernet, not Wi-Fi. Plug a laptop directly into the gateway. If that works, your Wi-Fi router is the problem (or its placement, or interference). If Ethernet also fails, the carrier signal is down.
  4. Now check live sources above. If others are reporting in your area, it's a real Optimum outage — wait, don't call. Most outages resolve in under 90 minutes. If you're the only one reporting, call Optimum.
