New residential fiber funded: SP Broadband Inc. ($57.6M BEAD allocation) — what to ask before you sign

What this is

SP Broadband Inc. received a 57.6M BEAD allocation to build residential fiber. That means free fiber to the home, professional install of Cat6 wiring inside the house, Wi-Fi gear, and no early-termination fee.

The questions every install veteran asks (and reviewers don't)

  1. What's the long-haul peering deal? A small BEAD-funded ISP can run beautiful fiber to your house and still have brutal Netflix or YouTube performance if their upstream peering is a single thin pipe. Ask before you sign.
  2. Who handles the actual install? Is it their crew or a sub? Sub crews can be excellent or terrible. Ask for the sub's company name and check it locally.
  3. What's their support hours? Big-3 carriers have 24/7 support. Small ISPs often have business-hours only — fine until your Saturday afternoon outage.

Rick's bottom line

Free fiber is rare. Take it. But ask the three questions above before signing, and keep your existing internet active for the first 30 days while you verify performance. After 28 years of installs, I've seen exactly two scenarios where a BEAD-funded fiber install went sideways — both were peering issues nobody caught at sign-up.
