Affiliate Disclosure
Plain-English statement of how we earn affiliate commissions, which programs we're in, and the editorial firewall between commissions and recommendations.
The honest answer
Yes, some links on this site are affiliate links. When you click one and buy something, we earn a small commission. The price you pay is the same — affiliate commissions come out of the retailer's margin, not your wallet.
The commission has zero influence on which products we recommend. Here's how we keep that true.
Our editorial firewall
The site is built around a strict separation between editorial recommendations and affiliate revenue:
- Reviews are written first. Rick writes every device review, every Live TV comparison, every cable platform analysis based on 22 years of residential install experience — what he actually puts in clients' homes, what holds up, what fails, what overdelivers for the price.
- Affiliate links are added second. Once a recommendation is written, an editor (not the reviewer) attaches retailer links via a central
affiliate-links.jsfile. The reviewer doesn't see which retailers pay more, which programs have higher commission rates, or which merchants are running promo bonuses. - Recommendation rankings never reflect commission size. Roku Ultra is recommended ahead of Apple TV 4K in most use cases not because Roku pays more (it doesn't — Apple's program is competitive) but because Roku is the right call for non-Apple households.
- Where we send you is based on price, return policy, and shipping reliability — not which affiliate program pays the highest rate. Where two retailers are tied on those, we'll favor the affiliate we have a relationship with, but never at the expense of the customer experience.
Which affiliate programs we participate in
As of May 2026, UntangledStreaming participates in:
- Amazon Associates — tracking ID
untanglestrea-20. Most product links to Amazon route through this. - CJ Affiliate (Commission Junction) — for select streaming-service partners (NordVPN, Surfshark, plus pending merchant approvals).
- Impact — for streaming-platform and direct-merchant partnerships (pending approvals for major streaming services).
- Awin / ShareASale — pending approval. Adds coverage for additional consumer hardware brands.
We're not in FlexOffers (declined). We're not running display ad networks (Mediavine, AdThrive, Raptive, Google AdSense). The site has no banner ads, no popups, no autoplay video ads. If you've ever experienced what a typical cord-cutting blog looks like — that's not what we do.
How to spot an affiliate link
Every affiliate link on this site is marked with rel="sponsored noopener" on the anchor tag. That's the FTC-recommended HTML attribute for affiliate links. If you view source on any product recommendation, you can verify which links pay us a commission and which don't.
Plain-text retailer mentions (e.g., "available at Best Buy") are not always affiliate links — only the actual element matters. If it has rel="sponsored", it's an affiliate link. If it doesn't, it isn't.
What we never do
- We never email or call merchants asking for negative reviews of competitors.
- We never accept payment to feature a product.
- We never accept review hardware in exchange for a positive review. When manufacturers send units, we either return them or disclose the loan on the review page.
- We never modify a recommendation to favor a higher-commission product. If we did, we wouldn't be useful to readers, and we wouldn't last.
A note on ownership
Editorial site ownership is independent of the affiliate programs above. The connection between UntangledStreaming and our sister residential AV installation business is disclosed on the Privacy & Disclosures page for full FTC compliance.
Want to verify any of this?
Email [email protected] with any specific recommendation you want explained. We'll tell you:
- Whether the retailer link is affiliate
- Why that retailer was chosen
- What other retailers carry the same product and at what price
Transparency is the entire reason this site works. If anything ever looks off, ask. We'll show our work.
