What we collect, what we don't, and the affiliate / ownership disclosures the FTC requires us to make.
What we collect
Your ZIP code, when you take the quiz. This is used in your browser only — to look up which TV providers actually exist in your area. It is not sent to a server, not stored against your name, not shared with any third party.
Your quiz answers, in your browser. What you currently pay, what channels matter to you, which streaming apps you already use. Stored in your browser's local storage so you can come back and finish the quiz later. Clearing your browser deletes them.
Anonymous, aggregated traffic data. Page views, click-through rates, where people drop off. We use this to figure out which pages are useful and which ones aren't. It is not tied to a name, email, IP address, or device fingerprint.
Your email, only if you give it to us. If you write to us at the email address on the Contact page, we have your email. We don't add it to any mailing list. We don't sell it. We don't share it. We answer your question and that's it.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your name, home address, phone number, payment information, demographic profile, or what you browse outside this site. We don't run third-party ad-network tracking pixels. We don't fingerprint your device. We don't build a profile of you.
Cookies
We use a small number of first-party cookies for two things: keeping your quiz progress between visits, and counting page views in aggregate. That's it. No advertising cookies. No cross-site trackers.
Affiliate links
When a page on this site recommends a specific product (a streaming device, a Live TV service, a router, etc.), the buy link is sometimes an affiliate link. If you click it and buy the product, the merchant pays us a small commission. The price you pay is the same either way.
Our affiliate programs include Amazon Associates and Impact Radius partners (Best Buy, manufacturer direct programs, etc.). Affiliate links never influence which products we recommend. The product is recommended because it is the right product — not because the affiliate program pays more.
Ownership disclosure (FTC required)
UntangledStreaming.com is owned and operated by SWAT A/V, a residential audio-video integration company based in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Rick — the author on every page of this site — is the owner of SWAT A/V. His 28 years of in-home install experience is the basis for the advice on this site.
SWAT A/V offers high-end residential AV consultations and full-home installs in the Washington, D.C. market. Outside that market, there is no service relationship between SWAT A/V and any reader of UntangledStreaming.com. We do not push SWAT A/V services on this site. Most readers will never see a SWAT A/V link. The only place the connection is mentioned is this paragraph.
This disclosure exists to satisfy FTC guidelines around material connections between a content site and an affiliated business.
Children's privacy
This site is intended for adults making household TV and streaming decisions. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
Your rights
You can clear your browser's local storage at any time to delete saved quiz progress. You can email [email protected] with any question about your data or to request anything we have about you be deleted.
Changes to this policy
If we change anything material on this page, the "Effective" date in the header above gets updated. We will not change this policy in a way that gives us more access to your data without telling you on the homepage first.
