Lutron RA2 Select vs Lutron RadioRA3 — Which One Should You Actually Buy?

The big-money decision in Lutron. RA2 Select runs $8-20K for a luxury home; RA3 runs $25-60K. Here's where the extra money actually buys you something — and where it just buys you ongoing dealer service calls.

The decision in one sentence

RA2 Select for the 95% case — luxury homes under 8,000 sq ft. RA3 for the 5%: very large homes or specific Crestron/Control4 integrations.

Lutron RA2 Select wins when…

  • Your home is under 8,000 sq ft
  • You want to manage scenes yourself after install (Lutron app)
  • You don't want ongoing dealer service-call dependency
  • You don't need Sunnata Touch keypads or 100+ devices
  • You're budget-conscious for a luxury install ($15K vs $50K matters)

Lutron RadioRA3 wins when…

  • Your home is 8,000+ sq ft and loaded with devices (100+)
  • You're building a Control4 or Crestron whole-home system
  • You specifically want Sunnata Touch keypads
  • You have a long-term relationship with a Lutron Pro dealer and don't mind the service-call model

★ Rick's verdict

RA2 Select is the right call for almost every luxury home. The honest take is that most RA3 installs would have been just fine on RA2 Select — the homeowner pays 2-3× more for capability they'll never use, plus locks themselves into a dealer-dependency model. Stick with RA2 Select unless your specific use case (very large home, Crestron/Control4 integration, Sunnata Touch) genuinely requires RA3.
