Optimum (Altice USA) — Honest 2026 Review + the Cable-vs-Fiber Trap

Optimum is the residential brand of Altice USA — covering 21 states with both cable (Optimum) and fiber (Optimum Fiber) under the same name. The cable product is conventional DOCSIS 3.1 with 1 Gig down / 50 Mbps up. The fiber product is symmetric XGS-PON up to 8 Gig. Same brand, completely different value proposition. Critical to know which one Optimum is selling you at your address before signing up.

Rick's installer take

Optimum Fiber is genuinely competitive — $90 retail for symmetric gig matches Verizon Fios and AT&T Fiber spec for spec. Optimum Cable is conventional cable — fine if you have nothing better, but $90+ retail for 50 Mbps upload feels like 2010 pricing in 2026. Check at your address: if it's the fiber product, it's a reasonable pick. If cable, look at Fios or fiber alternatives first.

How to check your address

  1. Visit optimum.com.
  2. Look for "Optimum Fiber" or "Fiber Gig" labeling in the result. Without that label, you're being offered cable.
  3. Cross-reference with our Coverage Grid.
