The Plex free channel directory — 600+ channels sorted by what's actually worth watching

By Rick Baron — 28 years residential AV install · Verified 2026-05-26 · Re-verified monthly

What this is. Plex's free live TV layer carries 600+ ad-supported channels — no signup, no credit card, no nothing. The problem is the catalog is so big that everyone scrolls past 90% of it. This page sorts the channels by genre and calls out the ones Rick's customers actually keep coming back to. New here? Start with Plex 101.

Why this matters

Plex has been adding 10-15 new free channels every month all of 2026. The catalog hit 600+ in May 2026 and keeps growing. That sounds great until you open the app and have to scroll past a wall of cooking shows and B-movies to find anything you'd actually watch. This directory groups them so you can jump to the genres you care about.

Channels rotate. Plex adds + removes them constantly. The named examples below were live as of May 2026 — most stick around for months but some come and go. Use this as a map, not a guarantee.

📰 News & Weather ~40 channels

  • ABC News Live
  • CBS News
  • NBC News NOW
  • Bloomberg TV+
  • Reuters
  • Sky News
  • USA TODAY
  • The Weather Channel (selected programming)
  • Local Now (your city — varies by ZIP)

Rick: Local Now is the underrated pick — give it your ZIP and it surfaces local news + weather + traffic for your actual city.

🎬 Movies ~120 channels

  • FilmRise Classics
  • Hollywood Classics
  • Cinevault Westerns
  • Cinevault Classics
  • WBtv Cinema Drama
  • WBtv Classic Cinema
  • Action Channels (multiple)
  • Romance Channels (multiple)
  • Horror Channels (multiple — Bloody Disgusting, Crackle Horror)
  • Indie Cinema

Rick: WBtv's new themed cinema channels (added May 2026) are the best movie-channel additions in years — actual curated film slates, not just whatever's out of copyright.

📺 Classic TV ~80 channels

  • Bonanza Channel
  • Andy Griffith
  • Wagon Train
  • The Carol Burnett Show
  • I Love Lucy
  • Star Trek: TOS
  • FilmRise Sitcoms
  • Crackle Classic TV
  • Tubi Originals

Rick: If you grew up watching ABC/NBC/CBS at 8pm in the 70s-90s, Plex has 80+ channels of exactly that programming on rotation. This is the layer my parents' generation actually loves.

🎭 Drama & Thrillers ~50 channels

  • FilmRise Mystery
  • WBtv Cinema Drama
  • Crime 360
  • FilmRise True Crime
  • The Killer Box
  • Forensic Files

Rick: Forensic Files alone is worth opening Plex for. Streams 24/7 across 3 different channels with no ads on some.

🧒 Kids & Family ~60 channels

  • Toon Goggles
  • Kid Genius Cartoons+
  • Boomerang preview channel
  • Kabillion
  • Ryan and Friends
  • The Mr. Bean Channel
  • Smithsonian Kids

Rick: Decent rainy-day option but lighter than Tubi or Pluto on kids content. If kids drive the decision, those two are stronger.

🍳 Lifestyle & Cooking ~50 channels

  • Tastemade
  • Cooking Panda
  • Food52
  • America's Test Kitchen Streaming
  • FilmRise Lifestyle
  • WBtv Gardening (new May 2026)
  • WBtv Cooking (new May 2026)
  • Urban Lifestyle (new May 2026)
  • Tastemade Latino

Rick: America's Test Kitchen Streaming is the best free cooking channel anywhere — same content the PBS subscribers pay for.

🔬 Documentary & Science ~50 channels

  • Smithsonian Channel Selects
  • BBC Earth (clips)
  • How It's Made on demand
  • Real Wild
  • WBtv Space (new May 2026)
  • WBtv Medicine (new May 2026)
  • WBtv Supernatural (new May 2026)
  • FilmRise Documentary
  • Curiosity Now

Rick: WBtv's science + space channels (May 2026 additions) are punchy 30-minute docs on rotation. The bedtime channel for the curious.

🎵 Music & Concerts ~40 channels

  • Stingray Karaoke
  • Qello Concerts
  • Music Now
  • Latin Music
  • Hip Hop Channel
  • Country Music Channel
  • Classical Music Channel

Rick: Qello Concerts is the hidden gem — full concert films from 70s-90s acts that you can't find on Spotify or Apple Music.

⚽ Sports ~30 channels

  • Stadium
  • FlashSports (TV)
  • NHL FAST Channel
  • PGA Tour FAST
  • Outside TV (extreme sports)
  • Surfer Magazine
  • Eleven Sports (international football)
  • BeIN Xtra

Rick: Don't expect live US major-league games here — those rights aren't on FAST. But for second-tier sports + replays + extreme sports, the lineup is real.

🎭 Comedy & Variety ~30 channels

  • The Bob Ross Channel
  • Just for Laughs
  • Comedy Dynamics
  • The Pet Collective
  • FailArmy
  • People Are Awesome

Rick: Bob Ross. 24/7. Yes really. It's exactly what you need on a rainy Sunday.

🌎 International ~80 channels

  • NHK World Japan
  • DW English (Germany)
  • France 24 English
  • TRT World (Turkey)
  • Africa News
  • Latin American sub-set (~30 channels)
  • Korean drama channels (multiple)
  • Anime sub-set (~10 channels)

Rick: NHK World is one of the best free international news channels on the planet and most Americans never know it exists.

🌈 Inclusive & LGBTQ+ ~10 channels

  • Revry Originals
  • WBtv LGBTQ+ Cinema (new May 2026)
  • OUTtv movies
  • Progressive content channels (multiple)

Rick: WBtv added a curated LGBTQ+ cinema channel in May 2026 — solid film picks.

🎮 Anime & Niche ~20 channels

  • Crunchyroll Hime
  • Anime All Day
  • Mecha Anime
  • Studio Ghibli preview clips
  • Comedy Anime

Rick: Free anime layer is thinner than Tubi or Crunchyroll Free, but the "always-on anime in background" use case is real. See our anime deep-dive.

How to use this

Heads up: the FAST channel layer is separate from the personal-media-server side of Plex. You don't need a server or any owned files to use these — just the Plex app. See Plex 101 for the full three-layer breakdown.

Rick's honest take

Most cord-cutters install Plex for the personal media server side and never even notice the free channel layer. That's a mistake. 600+ channels for free is one of the best deals in TV — better than Pluto, comparable to Tubi, and the only catalog that grows by 10-15 new channels every month.

The catalog is also the messiest in the category. Channels disappear without notice, new ones pop up that aren't worth your time, and the discovery UI is OK but not great. This directory is a starting map — favorite the channels you actually use, ignore the rest, and let Plex handle the layout from there.
