2The venue — Augusta National
🏌️ Augusta National Golf Club · Augusta, Georgia
Designer: Alister MacKenzie + Bobby Jones · Opened 1932 · Played host to the first Masters in 1934.
Style: Traditional parkland design over hilly Georgia terrain · meticulously manicured · lightning-fast bentgrass greens famous for their movement and difficulty · towering loblolly pines line every fairway · azaleas + dogwoods bloom for the tournament.
Length: ~7,510 yards · par 72 · plays longer than the yardage suggests due to elevation changes.
Most famous holes:Amen Corner (11 White Dogwood, 12 Golden Bell, 13 Azalea) · the par-5 13th green guarded by Rae's Creek · the 12th hole — a 155-yard par 3 across Rae's Creek — is the most challenging par 3 on the PGA Tour by stroke-average data.
Course access: Famously private. Members include some of the wealthiest individuals in the world. The course is closed May through September each year and reopens in October for member play.
3Tournament week schedule (Speedweeks for golf)

5The Green Jacket + tournament traditions
The Green Jacket: Single-breasted, two-button, brass-buttoned, with the Augusta National crest on the breast pocket. Same shade worn by club members since 1937. Champion version awarded starting in 1949. The new champion keeps the jacket for one year, then it lives at Augusta National after that.
Butler Cabin ceremony: The first Green Jacket presentation happens at Butler Cabin immediately after the round, with the defending champion helping the new champion into the jacket. Then a public 18th-green ceremony for the patrons.
Champions Dinner: Tuesday night before the tournament. Past champions only. The defending champion picks the menu — Tiger Woods chose cheeseburgers in 1998; Hideki Matsuyama chose miso black cod in 2022.
Honorary starters: Thursday at first light, legends of the game tee off ceremonially. Currently Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson. Previously Arnold Palmer (1981 through his death in 2016), Lee Elder (2021).
Pimento cheese sandwiches: $1.50 — Augusta National's prices haven't changed in decades. Egg salad $1.50, ham + cheese $3, BBQ pork $3, beer $5. Cash only.
Patrons (not "fans" or "spectators"): Augusta calls everyone "patrons." No running. No phones. No cameras during the tournament. Concession trash put in trash cans.
