How to Mount a TV Corner Mount — Rick's Install Guide
Corner mounts are off-axis by definition — the TV needs to swing toward the seating, then tuck back when you're not watching. A full-motion (articulating) mount is non-negotiable here. The trick is making sure the wall behind it has stud support where you're anchoring.
What you need to know first
- Full-motion mounts pull out 18-24" from the wall. That's 100+ lb of torque on whatever you're anchoring to.
- Find the stud in the wall behind the corner — many corner walls have only one stud at the corner itself. Use a 2-stud spanning bracket if you can't hit two.
- Plan slack in the cables — a corner mount swings 90°+, which adds 12-18" to the cable path. Don't skimp on HDMI length.
- A tilting full-motion (Sanus VXF or VLF series) is the recommended default for corner installs over a console.
Quick answers
Can I corner-mount above a fireplace?
Rarely a good idea — corner fireplaces usually have stone or brick, plus heat is harder to model when the TV swings. We recommend a pro install for that combo.
Do I need extra-long lag bolts?
Yes — most full-motion mounts ship with 1/2" × 3" lag bolts. Brick / stone needs masonry sleeve anchors.
